Clean out the clutter-zone.

S

Sometimes it takes over the entire house. Sometimes one room or closet or drawer. Clutter. Almost everyone has an area crammed full of stuff that was just shoved in there over the years. Most probably don’t even know what’s in there anymore. Let’s reclaim that space or one section of it during the next gloomy, wintery day, by following the steps outlined below.

Items Needed: Boxes, trash bags, markers, labels

  1. Create four boxes: Keep, Recycle, Donate, Sell
  2. Remove each item from the area, one at a time, and toss into the appropriate box or into a trash bag. Continue until the space is empty.
  3. Clean the space- wash walls, shelves, floor, etc. and dispose of trash.
  4. Take the Recycle Box to your local recycling center or otherwise remove from the location.
  5. If applicable, sort the items in the Donate box into small grocery type bags and label according to where they will be donated. Deliver to locations, or make arrangements for them to be picked-up.
  6. Make a list of the items in the Keep box. Identify where and how each item will be stored, and put them away accordingly. It is best to keep them in the room where they will most likely be used, and to keep similar items together.
  7. Lastly, decide how you will sell any remaining items. If you are planning to have a yard sale, you will need to keep the items in a temporary location until the weather warms. Keep all the yard sale items together In a clearly marked, sealed box. In the interim, you can list items in some newspapers for free or little cost, as well as online or in consignment stores.

Going forward, before putting things in that space again, ask yourself if you really need them. If so, decide where and how they should be stored to avoid re-accumulation of clutter. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to call, email or post!
